Closing a Chapter in Automobile Alley
BEE-TING THE HEAT
Do you feel it?
The heat of summer is upon us.
And our ever-wise friend, the bee has some inspirational tactics for staying cool in these rising temperatures.
Bee Cool
In addition to their nutritious diet of pollen and nectar, water is an important component of vitality for bees. Bees drink water, but they also collect water and bring it back to the hive for a homemade air conditioning! Worker bees spread the water across the surface of the hive and fan their wings, keeping the queen and larvae nice and cool. Ideally, bee hives are established close to a source of water allowing bees to conserve their energy and not venture too far for a drink. During the hottest temperatures when it’s hot, dry, and water evaporates quickly, be a friend to bees and water your plants or provide a water source – bees enjoy a bird bath!
Don’t take the heat lightly! Let’s see how the bee can help us stay cool this summer:
- Plan ahead and hydrate! Fruits and vegetables are an excellent source of additional water with the added nutritional benefits of electrolytes, phytonutrient vitamins and minerals.
- Be sure others in your family and community are staying hydrated and cool, too.
- Go to your nearest body of water, relax, and dive in!
Bee Wise
Even busy bees need a break! Bees adapt their schedule to avoid the heat of the day. Bees can be found out and about doing their very important pollinator work in the morning and late evening. During the highest temperatures, bees head back to the hive or may be found lazing on the petals of a flower next to a big pool of pollen. In cooler temperatures, bees huddle close together for warmth. When it’s hot, bees spread out to stay cool, leaving plenty of room for ventilation.
Adjust your schedule and expectations for productivity in the summer. Let’s see how the bee can help us be wise this summer:
- Adapt your schedule and avoid being outdoors in the heat of the day.
- When outside, take breaks. Focus your energy on less depleting or indoor tasks.
- Wear loose fitting clothing and utilize fans and shade to stay cool!
